Question Spring Newbie

Is it possible to design the maximum deflection angle of the torsion coil spring so that it can be used in multiple rotations? I want the angle to be in the range of about 720 degrees.

Answer Tokai Spring

Spring Newbie, thank you for your question!

Regarding the maximum torsion angle of the torsion coil springs, it can be designed even with a rotation of 720 degrees. According to the required spring characteristics, the bending stress at 720-degree rotation is designed to be less than the allowable stress using values such as material diameter, coil average diameter, and the number of effective coils. We should also note that the larger the rotation angle is, the larger the change in coil diameter during rotation. Since guide rods can be used with torsion coil springs by passing them through the inner diameter of the coil part of the springs, it is necessary to set the diameter of the guide rods in consideration of the change in springs’ diameter during use!
