Question Daniel

Could you/How do you calculate total number of coils based on the information below?

Rectangular wire helical spring 01
– Material dimensions: T0.6 x W2.0 mm
– Inner diameter: 6.3 mm
– Free length: 144 mm
– Number of active coils: ???
– Total number of coils: ???
– Work length of spring: 77.20 mm
– Load applied: 7.71 kg

Flad wire helical spring 02
– Material dimensions: T0.6 x W2.0 mm
– Inner diameter: 6.3 mm
– Free length: 139 mm
– Number of active coils: ???
– Total number of coils: ???
– Work length of spring: 71.30 mm
– Load applied: 8.16 kg

Answer Tokai Spring

Dear Mr. Daniel,

Thank you very much for contacting us!
Please find attached the formula which you can use to calculate the number of active coils (Na).

In which,
– k: Spring constant, k = P/deflection. For example,
①7.71 kg÷77.20㎜=0.01kgf/mm
②8.16 kg ÷71.3㎜=0.11kgf/mm
– G: Transverse elastic modulus. (For each material’s transverse elastic modulus, please find more information here: https://www.tokaibane.com/en/spring-design/rectangular-wire-helical-springs-formulas)
– t: Material thickness
– b: Material width
– D: Coil mean diameter

We hope this helps. If you have any other questions, please let us know anytime!

Best regards,
