Question Kota

Nice to meet you, my name is Kota.
I have a question for you. If a compression spring made from general SUS material (304 or 316) has a wire diameter of 0.25 mm, outer diameter of φ5 mm, and free length of about 8 mm, what temperature range can it be used in? It is okay if you can only provide me the lower limit.
Thank you in advance for your reply.

Answer Tokai Spring

Generally, the allowable temperature range of SUS304 / 316 stainless steel wire is said to be between -200°C to 290°C. When designing a spring, the surrounding environment in which it is used must be taken into consideration.
Thank you for your question, Mr. Kota!

Answer Spring Newbie

This is the first time I heard about the lower temperature limit of SUS springs. There is a type of SUS spring material called SUS631J1 and I want to ask you a few questions about this material too.
(1) What temperature range can be used for a spring with a wire diameter of φ0.25 mm, outer diameter φ5 mm, and free length of about 8 mm?
(2) Is the SUS304 spring more durable in a low-temperature environment?

Answer Tokai Spring

Spring Newbie, thank you for your question! Am I correct to assume that your question is about the lower temperature limit of SUS631J1?
According to some documents, SUS631J1 has a limit of about -50°C. It is said that SUS304 and SUS316 austenitic stainless steels can be applied in places where the temperature is only about -196°C.
In both cases, the limit value of the materials and the limit value of the springs are different, so if you know the range of use of the spring, you can judge the applicability.

Thanks again for your question!

Answer Kobane

We are looking for a compression spring (wire diameter 1.9 x outer diameter 10 x 61L) that can be used in the environment of 500°C or higher.
Is it okay if we use Inconel? If not, are there any other good materials?

Answer Tokai Spring

Mr. Kobane, when the usage environment exceeds 500℃, we will propose our clients with Inconel material!
A spring with a wire diameter of φ1.9, an outer diameter of φ10, and a free height of 61 can be manufactured. It is necessary to determine the total number of turns according to the required load characteristics.
However, depending on the load characteristics, it may not be able to withstand the temperature at above 500°C.

Answer Kobane

Thank you for your prompt response. We will discuss with the manufacturer and the end user about this.
