Question KH

Nice to meet you. Thank you for providing such an informative forum.

We are designing a compression coil spring that also withstands load in the lateral direction. The Spring Technology Study book (3rd edition) published a method for calculating the deflection at the time of lateral load in the case of a circular cross-section coil spring. According to this, we can assume that under the same amount of load, the hardness of the spring in the horizontal direction is about 3 times that of the vertical direction (ratio of Young’s modulus to lateral elasticity).
In this case, is it possible to change the ratio of the hardness in the vertical direction and the horizontal direction by making the cross-section of the spring rectangular? I want to make the hardness in the vertical and horizontal directions the same. Is it possible? Also, is it possible to express the ratio in the form of some mathematical formulas?

Answer Tokai Spring

Thank you for writing to us, KH! And sorry for the late reply.& lt; (_ _) & gt ;.

The book “Spring Design” (2nd Edition) shows us a simpler way of thinking. According to this formula, the lateral spring constant is determined from the shape such as the height of the spring under load, center diameter, free length, and the longitudinal spring constant.
From this, we can see that it does not matter whether the material is round or square. Please note that there are various methods for calculating the spring constant in the horizontal direction, but none for the vertical direction. Because it is not possible for the 2 dimensions to withstand the same amount of force the same way, it is recommended that you test this by experiment, etc.!

We can send you a part of the “Spring Design” (2nd Edition) book directly by e-mail, so we would appreciate it if you could send us your contact from the link below! https://www.tokaibane.com/en/consulting/
